Athlete Development for Disability Sport

Program Information for Parents

As a parent of an emerging or established athlete there are many important factors that must be addressed to ensure your child is receiving a balanced, well rounded program. The ASDC – Capital Region’s Athlete Development for Disability Sport (ADDS) program provides expertise in strength and conditioning, nutrition, and mental skills training in order to ensure a balance is achieved.

The ASDC – Capital Region is based out of the University of Alberta and therefore has access to the most up to date methods and techniques currently used in the field of athlete development, contraindications to exercise, and any other secondary factors related to disability that may affect an athlete’s performance.

The ASDC – Capital Region’s multidisciplinary team will ensure that each athlete’s individual needs are calculated into their individualized program.

Parents are also encouraged to become educated with respect to training principles in strength and conditioning, nutrition, and mental skills, whether it be through a program offered through the ASDC - Capital Region, such as a Winning Edge Seminar or through individual research. It is important that the parent understand the reasoning behind the programs offered to their child in order to provide the necessary support to their child’s development as an athlete.
